3 Ways to shake up virtual meetings

Need some inspiration to energize your virtual meetings?  Don’t hold yet another monotonous meeting for your remote team.

Play4Business believes in using the LEGO® Serious Pla®y method as our go-to way for immediately changing up the energy in the virtual room.

If you aren’t yet trained in using this powerful methodology, here are 3 other ways in which you could liven things up during meetings.

  1. Whether the group has met previously or not, start the meeting in a different way to help people connect on a slightly deeper level

Invite the participants to find two or three photos on their cellphones that they are happy to share with others.  The photos need to reflect something that is important or special for them or something that makes them feel happy.

Once people have found a few photos that they are comfortable sharing, here are some options for you:

  • They could email their photos to you so that you can upload onto the screen.  Then invite each person to tell as few stories about them to their colleagues.
  • They could be divided up into pairs and they could text or email one another a few photos.  They could then have a private storytelling either via phone or in a break-out room.

This simple activity bonds people more closely and drops the negativity that could inform team behaviour.

  1. Use the nine pane window.

Use a whiteboard to divide your screen into 9 squares.

Invite the group to summarize the key points that have been made during the meeting.  Each pane needs to have some words and a simple drawing or emoji as a reminder of the main messages of the conversation.

You can also use this technique in breakout rooms and then in the plenary session, mini groups can present their nine pane windows to their colleagues.

  1. Ask the group an unusual question:

“What would make this session totally useless for you?  What would make this a really big waste of your time?”

Asking the question in this type of reverse way ensures that the group really gives thought to what they don’t want.  This in turn clarifies for them what is in fact really important to achieve during their time together.
