Which learning modality would be most appropriate for your team?

The learning landscape continues to evolve at a rapid pace and there are so many different learning options available. Online, in-person, virtual live, webinar, blended – how do you choose what is right?

Here are some considerations for you to review before deciding what would work best in your own context:

  • What is your usual completion rate from online programs?
  • Is your team distributed across various sites that make it impossible to meet in person?
  • What changes do you notice in the level of skills and behaviors from online learning or other programs that you have introduced in the past?
  • What sort of learning modality do your users respond to best when you look back on what has been done previously?
  • How far does your budget stretch?
  • What is the level of urgency of the training?
  • What is the required reach of the training?

Clearly, there are often times when you don’t have much choice.  Budget and other constraints identified by the questions above lead you to very definite solutions.

However, where possible, now that there are so many options in terms of learning modalities, why be stuck with a solution that might have been used many times in the past, but doesn’t bring you the results you are looking for.

And these don’t necessarily involve a ‘break the bank’ type of budget.

We’ve been able to introduce a whole range of innovative ways of training that bring about positive change in teams.

Here are some examples:

  • A client in the health care sector had to introduce a new IT system.  Instead of a series of static images with red arrows indicating where data needed to be included, we switched to creating a library of live recordings of the system in use.  All recordings had closed captions and transcripts and can be accessed on demand.

This enabled team members to play the recordings as many times as they needed until they mastered the skills they needed.

Parts of the process that were familiar to them could be skipped.

This put the learner in control of their own learning and with a second screen open, they could practice at the same time as the recorded demonstration.

Quick, easy and low cost.

  • A major global client had to prepare their company for some major changes in policies and procedures.  Instead of sending out emails and PDF attachments, we prepared short videos and online learning modules that brought the concepts to life.

Team members engaged more strongly with the content as it felt real – there was movement in the modules and it stood out from that they had seen previously so that there was a better chance of the information embedding into their long-term memory.

End result – the best open rate that the client ever had compared to past efforts and a higher level of buy-in.

  • A client in the construction sector needed to upskill team leaders to deal with newly formed hybrid teams.  They couldn’t attend an in-person event and budget was tight.

We selected one of the Play4Business team programs from our catalogue which was 80 percent close enough to the skills that they needed to impart to their team.  We customized the balance of the learning and included references to other content within the company.

This was followed up with a live virtual class to further embed the skills and to create an interactive forum for questions and the ability to learn from colleagues.

Adaptable, quick to release and met the immediate needs of the group.
